SAD: Horned One Prelim

October 16, 2008

This is a trial design specifically for a mask & head (where one ends and the other begins is largely unexplained in setting) for a Lord of Winter known as The Horned One. I’m really not settled on it, but I
do like the design overall.

I’m still working on what to do with the rest of the body. I was this creature to look barbaric and primal
yet also alien and otherworldly.

The Horned one embodies the predator/prey relationship, the Darwinian hostility-yet-equilibrium of
the universe and so on.

SAD: Balor Sketch

SAD: Balor Prelim Design
by *uhlrik on deviantART

Though I’ve not posted anything about my ongoing Sketch-a-day thing lately, it’s still ongoing. Since I’m most of the way done with one of my more battered sketchbooks, I’m focusing on using that until it’s full so there’s not been a lot of the digital stuff to post here.

However, I really wanted to put this idea down and sketchbook work didn’t feel right for this one, so back to the tablet I went. It’s not really a finished piece (but then, finished work isn’t the point of SAD, in case ya haven’t cottoned on to that yet). What it is, however, is a concept piece helping me get this idea down before it flies out of my head.

I’ve been thinking of various ways thet the Lords of Winter might manifest if they were to appear in a manner that mortal beings can comprehend them. They’re unutterably ancient and powerful primordial forces that can simultaneously be referred to as mighty totem spirits, demon lords, faerie princes and demigods. They aren’t truly finite beings in quite the way that you and I think of ourselves as beings: they’re really more like forces, and in actuality they’re pretty much formless as well, though they can form bodies as well.

I’ve been doing a number of sketches of Lords of Winter lately and have been pretty much dissatisfied, especially with Balor (the one shown here). Balor tends to end up looking a bit like a Plaguebearer of Nurgle, and while I like Plaguebearers, I wanted something else for the He of the Evil Eye.

So I hit upon the idea that perhaps these primordial forces might have made or acquired artifact masks that would allow them to contain a portion of their ineffable nature, essentially creating avatars of themselves in order to directly interact with other beings.

Anyhow, Balor here is supremely bad news. He/it is something of a personification of the will to dominate and ravage, arguably the essence of the tyranny of vast, looming and forbidding nature. Not a chap that one wants to encounter.

commentary welcome.

SAD: The Lost

SAD: the Lost
by *uhlrik on deviantART

My latest SAD is another LoA piece, another group called The Lost. They’re formerly-normal people that have been cursed/transformed by contact with the Otherworlds, particularly Autumn. I based this particular one off a character I created ages ago who looked pretty much like an undead mummy, but was in fact a somewhat mad living man laboring under a nasty curse.  Maybe I’ll make a different version of him at some point…

SAD: Floating Mordamund Head
by *uhlrik on deviantART

Today’s SAD is a toon-ized take on the face of Mordamund, the Archon of Vision, floating in front of a big fuzzy icon of the Principle to which the old man is aligned. Yeah, he’s from LoA, how did you guess?

SAD: Bertolt Brecht

Today’s SAD piece is one I have approached with a somewhat different (but still deliberately sketchy) style and approach. Would you believe that this fellow is a witch-hunter? I’m sure that you find this a shocking suggestion.

SAD: Aquila

SAD: Aquila
by *uhlrik on deviantART
Okay, here’s another of my SAD series. I haven’t posted one to LJ in a few days, bu I do like this one.

Aquila is a wizard from LoA, and I anticipate that he’ll be a major NPC. And yes, he does deliberately foster the appearance of the "classic" itinerant sorceror. One wonders why…

SAD: Female Fomorian

SAD: Female Fomorian
by *uhlrik on deviantART

I’m provisionally calling this particular Fomorian by the name Rahann, as her look is modified and stripped-down from the designs I did for a Khornegor character of the same name from WFRP. I’ve decided to drop the white-eyes thing that was part of her original design, partially because it’s a Khorne thing and partially because The Fiend has the same thing going on sometimes (even though I created The Fiend a decade after creating the original Rahann), and because several of Uhlrik’s iterations have done similar things when they lost their tempers (heck, the new version might too). So yeah, thinning out the overuse of that motif.

Below is a full-body design sketch of the same character I fairly recently created, where I was doodling different possible parts of her design, debating the mane or no mane thing back and forth with myself, and so on. If nobody decides to run a character similar to this in LoA, I think she’ll have to show up at some point as an NPC; I just think she’s cool. I think I need to put a bit more in the way of ornamentation in her mane. A couple feathers maybe? Also, I’m thinking some piecemeal armor, like a pauldron and a couple other pieces might be a good look for her. General feedback on her design is more than welcome – it’s certainly not finalized yet and probably won’t be until such time as she appears in a game post.

SAD: Shepherd

SAD: Shepherd
by *uhlrik on deviantART

This, while it’s another in my GK:1943 SAD pieces, is more than a little bit of a departure from a lot of my other work, and I think that’s a good thing. Good Father Anderson was fun to draw. However, at first I forgot the old codger’s glasses, so I had to go back and add them. I’m not sure I’m crazy about them though, so I’ve got the older version on file just in case.

So here we have Jason Blood (AKA Heretic, as he is codenamed in GK:1943) with Etrigan the Demon standing behind him like a shadow.

I rather like this one.

SAD: Warhammer Caramelldansen
by *uhlrik on deviantART

Today’s SAD is… wrong. I have submitted Uhlrik to what may be the ultimate indignity: performing the Caramelldansen dance. Why, I don’t know. I bet he lost a bet with Cassandra. She certainly looks happy enough to be shaking what her momma gave her.

He is… less enthusiastic.

There are a couple of small appropriated images worked in here as well. Can you identify them?

Yeah, I know it’s an old meme, but for some reason this idea popped into my head and wouldn’t go away. Like that frakking song…
