New Bremen, Closed For 10 Years?

June 17, 2014

Today is the 10th anniversary of the closure of the venerable New Bremen Moderated Chat, which for what few whippersnappers out there may actually stumble over this, was a Java-based chat environment that was a cousin to the venerable MUDs, something like a text-based MMO for roleplaying in White Wolf’s World of Darkness (now known as the cWoD, and revived a couple of years back thanks to Onyx Path). I played there from their opening on April 22, 2000, bringing the original iteration of Linda Lee in there from the get go, and I had the pleasure and honor to be the head of its Werewolf team that ran the final scene that closed the doors on its final day. A June 17th, 2004 closure was planned, but the final scene rolled over past midnight Pacific time and into the following day before we finally wrapped and pulled the plug, so I stick with the 18th and do the same with this post, on general principle.

On January 27, 2002 I became an assistant ST there, working with the inimitable Joy Nelson and covering Kinfolk and the Media in New Bremen’s Mortals team, then in May-June of that year I was promoted to full ST, kept Kinfolk as part of my portfolio and was moved over to the Werewolf team assigned to cover the SF, GoF and ShL tribes. By August I had been reassigned to open the door to the antagonists area of WtA (I kept Kinfolk for a while too, and coordinated the Broken Caves sept’s sub-team for a while. In September 2003, I picked up the mantle of head Werewolf ST and remained in that capacity for the duration. Looking back, I can see a great many things that I could have done better of course, but that is of course the nature of hindsight. For example, character creation was too restrictive by the end as an intended remedy to their wild and wooly early days’ utter havoc, and the way that Lore abilities worked was a bit much, and I’d like to have made PCs rather than plot more of a driver to the Malfean Quest storyline; though I did try to strike a balance there, I do think my approach was a bit off that center. Still, it was fun doing it and the players that participated in the quest as well as the last stand of the Mended Past sept did tell me that they enjoyed the experience, which I suppose is the final measure of my team’s efforts. That was also my departure from STing in a moderated chat environment, a decision that I do not regret. Still, fond and often bemusing or aggravating memories abound.

ImageYes, I still have that old GIF that served as the logo for my old and long-lost Geocities New Bremen ST page. That’s because I still am the Wyrm. And yes, of course I backed the BotW20 kickstarter. So should you, but only if you like cool things. You do like cool things, don’t you?

In honor of the closure of New Bremen, I will post a few items from the end, and over the next few days I’ll post some screenshots of particularly memorable or humorous moments from (or talking about) NB that either I or others felt the need to save, some old NB-related artwork and so on. (more…)

Dreams, Memories and Tomorrows

May 24, 2012

(This story bit overlaps with Falling Awake and The Morning Breaks but mostly takes place after both)

It was about 2 or 3 in the morning when Ro finally rubbed her tired eyes and stretched. She could easily refresh herself and go for quite a while without sleeping, but sleeping allowed one to dream and process. Besides, Joseph was only marginally awake and she’d done all she could for this leg of Linda’s journey.

“Okay… I’m going to get a few hours of shut-eye. You do the same, huh?” Her blue eyes rested on the garou male a long moment, expression soft and a little wistful. They’d talked on and off since bringing Linda back to the house. Some surprises and ‘aha!’ moments on both sides led both of them to a greater understanding, she hoped. “Hold her tight and I’ll be back when she wakes, or a little after.”

“I’ll do that,” he said softly and flashed her a charming, white-toothed smile. Joseph was undeniably handsome, but he was also a man that knew how to listen and was good at drawing people out to talk about themselves. Also, he remembered the details later and could retell them to sound more exciting and meaningful than they had to the original teller. “Sleep well, Ro. She’ll be safe with me.” (more…)

The Morning Breaks

May 19, 2012

(The below is a direct follow up to Falling Awake)

Amrita had rolled into lotus after her last pose of the morning, body sweating pleasantly from one of her more strenuous routines. Her connection to Gaia was still strong this morning, and she let her awareness expand in the meditative state, flowing into “all that is” with each exhalation. It was a kind of pleasure that was difficult to explain to anyone who’d never felt something similar, that letting go of the ego-self in favor of the ultimate release into everything at once. But those who’d been there knew it too, and sometimes that had to be enough.

She was deeply aware of the shifts of consciousness in the house. One such shift rang like a bell in her own consciousness, just as the sun peaked above the eastern horizon.

Linda had awakened. (more…)

Falling Awake

April 12, 2012

All was pain and anguish. Howls and the beating of drums pounding in her head, a scratching and clawing beneath her own skin, and a horrid, agonized shrieking that only she could hear.

A powerful, furred set of arms was wrapped firmly yet gently about her and her face was pressed into the chest of their owner, a tender, slim human hand was clasped hard in her ghastly claw, and a cooling, soothing sensation radiated from the little metallic devices that were adhering to her temples. These few comforts she clung to as best she could through unknown hours of suffering.

Again the howling came, and the comforting hand, the supporting arms and the calming devices were gone.

Her eyes closed. (more…)

Awakening: The Battle of Cinder Cone

December 20, 2011

This sequence is a cutscene related to chapters 2-3 of The Enemy of My Enemy, the second story of the Awakening Chronicle.

*     *     *     *     *

Joseph Chases-the-Dream rejoined his pack after consulting with the mixed task force of mages, Garou and Kinfolk that had volunteered to strike at the witches beneath Cinder Cone and found his pack alpha Mingan Leaps-Like-cougar, the Wyrmfoe of the Sept of the Boiling Earth, addressing the several gathered packs. Joseph noted that a ways off from the group stood a tall, ragged bespectacled white man with close-cropped hair: Marcus Falcon’s-Resolve, who had been Ostracized. The other Garou present were ignoring his existence, neither welcoming nor forbidding him: he did not exist in their eyes, and Joseph blinded himself to the disgraced Silver Fang as well.

Mingan spoke: “We of the Warpath shall be the head of the arrow aimed at their hearts. Spear Dancers, follow immediately behind us, and the rearguard shall be the Black Wings,” Leaps instructed them as he reviewed the plan of attack. He gave each pack their assignments of which portions of Cinder Cone’s peak each was to sweep clear.

“The Wyrmbringers have numbers. They have high ground, and distance, and they are armed with silver ammunition,” Leaps stated gravely, “We must advance up a steep slope to fight them, and we have no cover other than what we ourselves can create. (more…)

Awakening: You’re Family Now

October 12, 2011

This is a side scene/blue book focusing on one miss Linda Lee, who until a few minutes before this scene was Kinfolk to the Black Spiral Dancers, but now has renounced them and been adopted into the Uktena.

*     *     *     *     *

Linda huddled in the ritual robe that Mapiya Sacred Hoop had been kind enough to drape over her thin, freezing shoulders and the moccasins that had been provided for her feet once the Rite of Adoption was completed. Sunset on a mountainside in springtime was no time to be standing around with nothing but some body paint between oneself and the elements. She took a few moments as the Garou cleaned up after their rite to rescue her abandoned overcoat and slip that across her shoulders like a cloak for a bit of extra warmth. (more…)

Awakening: A Gift

October 4, 2011

This is a transcript of a brief scene that takes place immediately after the most recent scene of The Boiling Earth (part of Chapter 4), where the troupe had just come from meeting with Solomon Wright. It focuses on Linda and Amrita.

*     *     *     *     *

Aladdin pulled up at the Seneca Motel in Chester. It really was a bargain basement sort of a place, but on the plus side they didn’t ask questions when Linda came in with blood on her jumpsuit the day before.

Linda clambered out of the vehicle and uttered a slight gasp. “Oh, ah almost fergot… Am? Ah still got that present fer ya.” (more…)

Awakening: The Pretanic Cross

October 2, 2011

Here is a story segment covering some of the events after The Boiling Earth, Chapter III: The Scouring of Prospect Peak. It takes place just after Steve passes out in his motel room’s bed from pain and fatigue at just having had his midsection sewed back into one piece on a tile floor then cleaned up, dragged to a bed and put down to rest.

*     *     *     *     *

Sighing heavily, Linda slipped over to the sink. The pale and sickly woman stared at her haggard and blood-begrimed self there and shook her head. The cut on her cheek was still bleeding, and blood had run out from under its soaked bandage to befoul the neck of her jumpsuit. Some had gotten in her hair as well. Stitches for herself after all, then. (more…)

Awakening: Of Banes, Bindings and Bloodlust

September 20, 2011

Here is another interlude that takes place shortly a few minutes after my recent post about Guillermo, but this time following the stealthy Kinfolk ritualist and secret Fomor named Linda Lee. I rolled for the results of the rite and other actions performed here a couple of days ago before I began writing this post, and then incorporated the results of the dice into the narrative.

* * * * *

As the others rushed up the hill towards the Blight, Linda had some unfinished business to attend to. The Banes had assaulted them, and one had given her a wound. Revenge for this insult would not be furloughed or delayed as the Garou seemed content to allow for the moment. They were needed to confront still more Banes elsewhere on the mountain, she agreed, but she herself was not, and she wanted to make sure that there was no chance of further trouble from the defeated spirits. She made as if to follow her compatriots, but the moment Marcus looked away she slipped behind a tree near to where the others had fought the Blight Children and slipped across the Gauntlet. Searing pain riddled her body as she crossed the barrier between worlds, as it always did; the Gauntlet was exceedingly well named, and though she relished her ability to enter the Umbra, the transition itself was something that she always dreaded. What Can You Do With a Dancer Ronin?

May 27, 2011

There’s a certain unmoderated WoD chat where I’ve been exploring a bit lately to see if it’s worth playing there fairly long-term. The quasi-tabletop style online Mage/Werewolf game I’m playing in already borrows their diceroller for our game. Chat play has a lot of disadvantages, but it can be fun to run in, play for an hour or two and split again on your own time rather than on a schedule. (more…)
