Four Splat Poll # 1

May 16, 2011

I’m currently finishing up the Kinfolk Four Splat post, and am pondering what to do next.

Lemme know what you’d like to see, and maybe I’ll take your choice. 🙂

Once I’ve done a few more OWoD Four Splat posts, I’ll expand it into other systems such as nWoD or further afield. I’m open to suggestions on those systems, though I’m not going to buy a new system just for a blog post containing sample characters… but I’ve got a lot of games, so there’s that.

Action Bastard

May 13, 2011

This takes me way, way, waaay back to the old White Wolf HTML Chat days:

“The views and opinions of Action Bastard do not necessarily reflect those of White Wolf or the Werewolf fan community as a whole. Action Bastard is not for everyone. Some people who use Action Bastard may experience unpleasant side effects such as projectile vomiting, explosive diarrhea, loss of motor control, chronic flatulence, drooling, skin rash, an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, socialist political views and painful rectal itch. If you experience any of these side effects discontinue use and contact your physician or local poison control center immediately. Do not get Action Bastard wet, and do not feed him after midnight. Store Action Bastard in a cool dark place. Only your doctor, licensed psychiatric professional, or your mom may prescribe Action Bastard. Action Bastard should not be used by women who are nursing, pregnant, or may become pregnant due the the risk of certain birth defects such as incurable halitosis and a tendency to strike ridiculous comic-book-character poses, naked, in public. Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling Action Bastard to lessen your risk of infection. For more information on Action Bastard see our website which doesn’t exist because we’re too lazy to create it and too cheap to hire someone else. Ask your doctor, pharmacist, pimp, Congressional representative, drug dealer, preacher, deadbeat dad or crack whore if Action Bastard is right for you!”

That’s right, Action Bastard is the WoD version of the Happy Fun Ball.

The Joys Of Online RP Politics

April 22, 2011

I was talking with an old friend from back in the NB days last night, who has stayed on in the world of chat-based RP that I mostly turned my back on ages ago for PbP and the like. He was one of my assistants when I was the Werewolf head in New Bremen.

I’d asked him a question about something that kickstarted a whole “old days” conversation, and he brought up a guy that used to be a bit of a problem both in-character and out back in NB, and with whom I used to butt heads a fair amount. Once I became Werewolf head rather than just a ST, this person had gone out of his way to transparently kiss my backside and try to curry my favor. Heck, if I remember correctly at one time he applied to be one of my assistants (but I might well not remember correctly). (more…)

Oh, The Germanity! A Real Cowgirl!

Horse dreams dashed, German teen turns to cow Luna

Regina Mayer

LAUFEN, Germany – When Regina Mayer’s parents dashed her hopes of getting a horse, the resourceful 15-year-old didn’t sit in her room and sulk. Instead, she turned to a cow called Luna to make her riding dreams come true…

Now, something about a young German girl jumping over fences on cowback makes me happy. I just can’t help it.

A Daily Deviation? For Me? Awesome!

November 28, 2010

Wow, that’s what I get for vanishing from DA again for a while… I totally missed some major stuff. First, one of my sculptures was awarded a Daily Deviation on DeviantArt! The piece is below:
Headless 3
Headless 3 by ~uhlrik on deviantART

Secondly, I got requests for me to approve this piece being added to two different galleries on DA. Needless to say, they’ve been approved now. I wish that this sort of thing generated an e-mail notice or something on DA, since I got them during a period of DA-inactivity. But anyhow, a huge thank you to LabyrinthCreations for first featuring my work and to both of the gallerists that asked to display it afterwards! And which were they? Well, see below:

:icon4rtnow:4rtnow, a group focused on showcasing professionals here on dA. They were founded by anda0105, and they display some exceedingly cool work. Give ’em some love.

:icondd-catalogue:dd-catalogue, the home of Daily Deviations. You don’t need me to tell you that they show some of the best of the best that DA has to offer. I’m honored and humbled to have a piece invited for display there.

I first posted that piece in 2006 (and sculpted it prior to that), and it is incredibly gratifying to have it noticed and appreciated at all, but especially some years after the fact, and despite the fact that I’ve been pretty quiet on DA for a while now. It’s incredibly encouraging, and hopefully it will inspire me to further and better efforts!

Yes, I’m excited. Yes, I’m a dork. But yes, I have every reason to be happy about this.

Note: the flash-based embed code from DA didn’t seem to be working properly with wordpress, so I’ve used the image embed for the same image from flickr instead – That one’s here.

LoK Videos

December 12, 2009

This post is essentially a linkdump to a large number of videos from the Blood Omen/Legacy of Kain video game series. It’s mostly in game event order, though with the time travel paradoxes and wacky chronology of the games, any attempt to put events in a strictily chronological order would be doomed to being horribly confused. Perhaps making it chronological from the perspective of a particular character like Kain or Raziel would make more sense. Anyhow, this is a group of the more significant events throughout the series and the entirety of the cutscenes from Defiance, the last game of the series. Probably needless to say, massive spoilers ahead.

These games were one of the many influences on the cosmology of the Legend of the Archons setting, and I’ve decided that the vampires of that setting will be something of a shout-out to this series in some ways.

Also, this series is one of those that managed to survive a change in genre – from top down quest with inventory and all that to a 3D action/puzzle adventure  series.

I Been Shipped!

November 14, 2009

Um, wow.

I have learned that a friend wrote a little fanfic-type drabble about one of my RP characters. This is, in itself, an interesting phenomenon. I’m accustomed to hearing about folks doing this with characters from literature, video games, TV etc… but using one of my PCs is a new one on me. On top of that, she ships him with another character from the same game.

My character? The crusty and emotionally distant,  spacefaring oh-so-stubborn tough guy Tarid Rachem del Barca. His partner in shipping? The passionate and fey magical alien Qamala Sotiris. They’re very much an oil-and-water pair, and I found this piece very amusing.

Oh, yeah… maybe I should provide the link to the little fic itself, huh?

Here it is.

Extra Value Combo Alpha: Fight!

November 14, 2009

This is hopelessly geeky, but anybody that has ever read my blog would expect nothing less.

Behold, Lysol Jones’ concept for a bold fighting game in the vein of Super Smash Brothers:

Extra Value Combo Alpha

I discovered this DeviantArt gem during a wiki walk at TVTropes. Please get a look at the fullview in the gallery itself. It is glorious to behold. I’d play that game.

Here’s a list of the characters that are used above, with a little commentary from myself: (more…)

All It’s Cracked Up To Be

July 28, 2009

Man, what a cheesy title.

Anyhow, I have wasted far more time than I’d care to admit to looking at stuff on Cracked. Here are a couple of things that I have found there that I greatly enjoyed, and I think you might as well. Also, a little bit of commentary.

5 Real Life Soldiers Who Make Rambo Look Like a Pussy, by Marc Russell.

This one’s really entertaining to me, partially because if there is anything awesome, dashing or fascinating, I seek after these things. Bonus points if there are weapons involved. And oh, are there weapons. Now, simo Hayha’s old bolt-action rifle is totally sweet, but come on… Fighting Jack Churchill took a sword and a war bow with him on raids against the Germans!

That part of the article made me a bit suspicious though, since it explicitly states that Mad Jack’s sword was a two-handed scottish claymore. Eccentricity aside, I didn’t find that likely so I decided to do a little bit more research. Much more likely and more suitable for the purpose, to my way of thinking about an English officer with a penchant for Scottish cutlery would be a basket-hilted claymore, the type of sword known more precisely as a “claybeg” and to D&Ders (and casual sword fanciers the world over) as a “broadsword.” Note that the above-cited wikipedia article specifically states that the basket-hilt is what churchill used. For a more in-depth look at the awesomeness of Jack Churchill, see this profile column by robert Barr Smith. Read it.

Also, the article takes a fictional hardcase for each real soldier and shows how the real thing was way more awesome. Look out for a twist ending, though.

6 Real Life Islands Way More Terrifying Than the One On ‘Lost’, by Rory Colthurst

I found the #1 to be a bit of a letdown, though it’s probably #1 for the stealth scary factor. However, the others are totally exactly what it says on the tin. Ramree Island is my favorite, though the #2 is utterly horrifying in almost every way that doesn’t have to do with being eaten alive. Well, once you get to the sharks part it’s that too.

That’s All, Folks

January 11, 2009

Well, I’ve decided I might as well just do this thing. I’ve created a wordpress blog for myself and after I finish this post I’m going to update the archive I made of my LJ (community posts that I want to grab will eventually follow) I won’t be posting new material to my LJ anymore. I’ll still check my flist periodically and may or may not add something to a comm here and there, but apart from that this is pretty much it for my LJ. I’m not planning on deleting my account, however. It’ll be around until LJ goes away, pretty much.

I first posted to this journal on 1/19/2005 with the rhetorical interrogatory, "Ooh, ain’t I angsty?" The four-year anniversary of that post is coming up in just over a week. I’ve enjoyed posting to my blog here and I’m glad of the friends and associations I’ve made here. I hope that at least some of them can continue after my departure.

Most of you either have my e-mail or chat handles, and some of you have my facebook. If you’re interested, you know where to find me. If you don’t have them, ask and ye shall receive. I  hope to see you on the other side.
