Lines of Authority

July 2, 2017

That title sounds a bit pompous, but it will suit. Anyhow, here’s another of those occasional non-geekery related posts that crop up on here. Come to think of it, it will actually seem pretty geeky to some, but it’s geekery of an altogether different order than the fare that usually makes its way onto my WordPress.

There’s a curious little card in my wallet that’s been there since the Clinton administration, one which I obtained from my late father. Upon this card is the following information about myself and the men that have gone before: (more…)

A Few Old NBish Bits

June 18, 2014

As a follow up to my last post, I thought that I would share a few old screenshots that I still had lying around somewhere from back in my old NB days or just following its demise. Most of the bits I’ll post here, I held on to for humor value, though a few I kept for more sentimental reasons. NB was a weird and wild place, and I enjoyed it… most of the time. Most but not all of the below are bits of out-of-character conversation. Due to the format of this blog, quite a few of these images are displayed at a smallish size. You should be able to right click on them and view their full size versions, however. None of the names have been changed to protect the guilty.

Below, the ever-awesome ST Keith shared with me something that a player (who was running a Demon: the Fallen character) had asked him via private message…

Apparently, Georgia’s got some, ah, interesting rules regarding their driver’s licenses:

Sometimes, a player would post in the wrong window, with embarrassing results:

Another Look at The Fiend

August 7, 2012

Some while back I stumbled over Hero Machine, but I didn’t really take the time to do more than glance at it very briefly until last night, when I decided to try and put it through its paces and see if it was up to creating images of a rather challenging character: my own Brigitte Adelinde von Teufel, better known as The Fiend.

For those of you that might be new readers, Fraulein von Teufel is a gestalt being, created by thoroughly merging the mortal woman whose name this creature still bears with a demoness (specifically a Fury, a bringer of punishment and retribution), as a result of a botched summoning where the Nazi Occultist (Sigismund von Asch, the human Brigitte’s mentor) tried to sacrifice her to summon the Fury in question through her mortal shell. Neither the woman nor the demon exists anymore, in their place is a hybrid partaking of the abilities, knowledge and identity of both at once. She hasn’t aged a day since that event in 1938. As a character, one could think of her as being somewhere between Elsa Schneider, Illyana Rasputin and John Constantine. But enough jibber-jabber. Here are the results of my fevered experimentation. As always, click the images if you want to get a look at larger versions of these images.

Modern era Fiend

Here’s Brigitte in the modern days. She doesn’t look half bad for a centenarian!

Perfect!

May 4, 2012

Argh!
I was thinking about Mage: the Ascension rotes, and my brain threw up a little with cross-pollinated ideas. If I ever run a Euthanatos with Forces 3, I’m going to be horribly tempted to have him shout “Yoga Fire!”
At least that’s better than what I’d be tempted to have an Akashic Brother say…

Stop looking at me that way. White Wolf DID make the Street Fighter RPG too.

When Pigs Fly

January 6, 2012

If I ever play an oWoD game where there is a Grondr character, I will have to insist that the character learns the Gift: Spirit of the Bird.

Just sayin’.

Favorites, 40K Edition

January 3, 2012

In the GrimDarkness of the far future, there is only war, or so we are told. The Warhammer 40,000 universe is populated with a considerable array of different options for players, and probably half of those options consist of different paint jobs for these guys:

At least that's what Games Workshop wants you to think of them.

At least that's what Games Workshop wants you to think of them.

As nifty as the Marines are, I consider them overhyped, oversaturated and frankly much less interesting than one specific other faction. Let’s think about the various factions that exist in WH40K and see a little bit of why. (more…)

I Am A Dork: Legend of the Archons Edition

November 22, 2011

A number of years ago, while working on Legend of the Archons, my FATE variant, I came up with a character who was supposed to appear in the setting, but I missed some very amusing correlations between him and a certain pop culture figure until very recently. It was pointed out to me when I was explaining him to Alesia, with whom I am working on the LoA story Agents of Change. She took one listen to my description of him and immediately spotted it, and even assumed that it was deliberate… I had to admit to her that it had not been, even though it’s so blindingly obvious. Yeah, I completely deserved the teasing that she gave me over it.

I needed a character who would be a master artificer, weaponsmith and armorer, cunning in clockwork and the crafting of sundry engines of destruction. He was to be physically strong and imposing, and both renowned and fairly wealthy due to his mastery.

He needed to have been taken captive by one of the story’s major antagonists and put to work making those lovely death dealing devices at his captor’s bidding, including a special suit of armor. The idea lay fallow for years because LoA got put on the backburner. Then Alesia and I revived the LoA idea and started working on a collaborative writing project on the subject and I took him out of mothballs.

Not long before I had the discussion with Alesia, I made a cheesy little avatar of him, below:

Dream Avatar
With all of the above in mind, I needed to name him. Since he’s resident in the Dachs region, which is analogous to the highly fragmented western portion of the Holy Roman Empire during the Renaissance, I wanted him to have a solid, strong sounding Germanic name. “Stark” is a German word for “strong,” so I named him Heinrich Stark.
You can stop laughing at me now.
Yeah, he looks like RD Jr. Yeah, he is in a cave with a box of scraps making weapons of mass destruction. No, I didn’t for a moment think of Iron Man when I made him up.
That said… if you’re going to do a thing, you might as well embrace it. As far as I am concerned, I am now under a moral imperative to have Tony Heinrich build himself a suit of clockwork power armor. Yeah baby, it’s going to be awesome.

Paradox Flaw: Kung Fu Edition

September 23, 2011

I just thought of an awesome/amusing Paradox Flaw for an Akashic Brother to pick up.

When he speaks, his lip movements and the associated sound are slightly out of synch as if he has been badly dubbed.

“Your Do is pretty good… but not as good as mine!”

Three’s Company

May 15, 2011

Come and knock on our door…..
    We’ve been waiting for you……
Where the kisses are hers and hers and his,
    Three’s company too.

Come and dance on on our floor……
Take a step that is new…..
We’ve a loveable space that needs your face,
    Three’s company too.

You’ll see that life is a frolic and laughter is calling for you……
    Down at our rendez-vous,
    Three’s company, too!

In this context, those chipper old lyrics are… actually somewhat distressing. I’m talking about the context of a passel of ghouls, Cainites and monstrosities designed to go along with Number Three, from my most recent Four Splat post. If Three ever actually appears in a game, I’d have at least some  of these folks show up too. (more…)

The Joys Of Online RP Politics

April 22, 2011

I was talking with an old friend from back in the NB days last night, who has stayed on in the world of chat-based RP that I mostly turned my back on ages ago for PbP and the like. He was one of my assistants when I was the Werewolf head in New Bremen.

I’d asked him a question about something that kickstarted a whole “old days” conversation, and he brought up a guy that used to be a bit of a problem both in-character and out back in NB, and with whom I used to butt heads a fair amount. Once I became Werewolf head rather than just a ST, this person had gone out of his way to transparently kiss my backside and try to curry my favor. Heck, if I remember correctly at one time he applied to be one of my assistants (but I might well not remember correctly). (more…)
