In The News: Turtles and Financial SNAFUs

Turtles Invade JFK Airport

(AP) NEW YORK – A runway at John F. Kennedy International Airport was shut down briefly Wednesday (11/8/2009) morning after at least 78 turtles emerged from a nearby bay and crawled onto the tarmac… (more)

Viva turtles! This story implies that they have some trouble with the diamondback terrapins at least a few times a year in the early summer. I wonder what the cost/benefit ratio of putting in a fence would be. This article’s got one of those sentences where a single word drastically alters the meaning of the sentence if you’re paying attention: “There have been no recent reports of the strikes causing any damage to an airplane.” That makes me wonder when it did happen and under what circumstances. These turtles are around 8″ in length, so it makes me wonder how much damage they could do, though it’s clear that they have inflicted some at some point. Hmmm…

$23 Quadrillion For Smokes?

(AP) MANCHESTER, N.H. – A New Hampshire man says he swiped his debit card at a gas station to buy a pack of cigarettes and was charged over 23 quadrillion dollars… (more)

Now that’s a rough day, having a banking error overcharge you for a purchase to the tune of $23,148,855,308,184,500. My favorite part of the story is, sadly, the most predictable (I saw it coming the moment I read the first paragraph): “Bank of America tells WMUR-TV only the card issuer, Visa, could answer questions. Visa, in turn, referred questions to the bank.” I’ve dealt with BofA quite a bit though I’ve never personally had an account with them, but I always dread having to interact with them again for any reason – they won’t get my personal business.
