Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On

Okay, for the record, it was something like the biggest SoCal earthquake since the ’94 Northridge Quake. It was still a measly 5.4 (considered a moderate quake), and nobody was really in any danger, and relatively few of us even got scared. What did I do? I cheerfully discussed the rolling motions with my coworker as they went on, then went to get a look at the big fishtank to see if the tropical fish were still spazzing (by the time we got there, they weren’t). I then proceeded to take a little while to mock the radio news people and how they insisted on getting reports from people that had experienced the earthquake… and correctly predicting that every single caller would say it was not that big a deal, even the guy that was doing a home addition within spitting distance of the epicenter. It didn’t even knock out all of the cellphone services.

So, for the record, it was pretty much a non event.

Also, for the record, if I have to choose between getting one decent sized quake every 14-20 years or so (we get teeny, barely noticable ones fairly regularly) and getting flooded/ snowed in/ tornadoes/ hurricanes several times every year, then I’ll cheerfully take the earthquakes.

Thank you, that is all.

Yeah, the biggest earthquake I was in was a 5.2?? Seattle to Portland thing in 2002ish?? Anyway, it started with a rumbling shake, waking me out of stark sleep, and then it went to a smooth “rolling” kind where it feels like the earth is waves on an ocean. I actually enjoyed that part, and there was no damage at all.

When the news casters started trying to make the earthquake seem like more than it was, I had to laugh and go away– that kind of earthquake isn’t scary at all.
