Oh, the Germanity: Uncle Adolf Wore a Gas Mask!

Hitler Hated Smoking, So It Must Be Okay!

Man… it’s funny how alive and well the reductio ad hitlerum fallacy retains currency in public discourse. Okay, so it’s not funny. What’s not funny (to me) is how in the postwar era, tobacco got so deeply entwined with notions of freedom and tolerance in the minds of the Deutschen, and the fact that so many people are dying over such fallacious thinking. Plus you have to love the tobacco advocate’s argument that there’s only a negligible threat from secondhand smoke. Thousands of deaths a year is a negligible threat? Thank You For Smoking, anyone?

Hitler was a painter. Hitler was evil. Therefore all painters are evil!

Waittasecond… *moves eyes in a shifty manner* … I’m a painter…

That’s what we call a “bad example,” see?

I have met a painter that wasn’t evil, you know. Just not recently.

See, while I hate the Germanity of it all, like the fact that their cigarette campaigns read like “Anti-smoking= plus-Hitler” I find it refreshingly amusing that people would put their own personal comfort on the back-burner to allow other people such public freedoms. Sadly, ulterior motives abound.

Yeah, it always looks nice on paper until you see the cause of things.

One of said motives being that doing it allows the one defending said freedom to feel smugly superior to anyone that they can therefore percieve as “less tolerant” then themselves.
