Miscreant Profiles: Trouble

I’ve decided that I’m periodically (most likely on a quite infrequent basis) going to post shortish profiles on roleplaying characters that I’ve run in the past  or am running in the present. So Here’s the first one. Appropriately enough, it’s a certain gangly Nosferatu. There are numerous links to definitions and pics here for reference. 🙂

Here Comes Trouble!

Rrrarrr!!
Game: A Vampire: The Masquerade tabletop-play chronicle, City of Angels. After that chronicle kind-of ground to a halt unresolved, I played him separately (and with a somewhat progressed storyline) online in the WW unmod java chats for a little while, but that is a silly place, where silly things happen. There, he once stumbled unawares into the leadup to the central dueling conflict of  Revolutionary Girl Utena (once I realized they were reliving an anime, even one I’ve still never seen, I booked it out of that storyline). Troupe-style play used in the chronicle, allowing layers of nonconnected and slightly-connected character involvement. Some tangential (and ignorant) crossover with Werewolf,  but interaction with KotE being one of the several major sources of internal and external conflict. There were Camarilla, Anarch, Sabbat, Ghoul and Kuei-Jin player characters, and unrealized plans for a brief side-scenario featuring Garou PCs.
Setting: Old World of Darkness, Los Angeles (Anarch Free State) with some modified metaplot event dates (Petrodon still alive early in the same year as the GLO began, destruction of Tremere Antitribu happening during the beginning of the chronicle rather than a couple years earlier).
Play Times: Originally created in a very different format in 1997 and played briefly. Recreated in 1999, played in that chronicle until approximately 2002-3, Played online in 2003.

Primary Alias:
Trouble
AKA: Porcupine, Casewerker, The Nossie Walking Arsenal
Birth Name: That’s largely irrelevant, or so he’ll tell you.
Sire: Alonzo Guillen, Archon to Justicar Petrodon
Clan/Generation/Age Class: Nosferatu/10th/Neonate
Haven: The ruins of Hawthorne Plaza, Hawthorne, Los Angeles County, CA, USA

Appearance:
Trouble is over six feet tall, broad-shouldered and extremely skinny.  He is totally bald and his nose is vestigial at best, but his ears are long and pointed while his jaw and mouth are out of all reasonable proportions. In fact, his jaw is capable of dislocating like a snake’s, and he is capable of turning most or all of his teeth into fangs. The creature’s spidery hands are endowed with extremely long, thin fingers. Trouble’s skin is a pasty blue-greenish white and his eyes are hazel. Bony joints and prominent veins are emphasized in his physique and his back and spine are ridged. A useless, vestigial pair of wings sprout from his back, and much of his clothing has a split in the center back to allow for them.  He seldom wears his actual face though, instead usually taking on varied appearances that usually involve being tall, skinny, male and bald. The high emphasis he places on fitting in (even if he’s mocking them as he does it) with the style-conscious Anarchs leads him to maintain much higher standards of hygiene than are common among the Nosferatu.
Typically, he dresses in large trench-coats in varying conditions, t-shirts and cargo pants, and wears assorted belts and pouches as well. He favors steel-toed boots over all other footwear. When he’s going to meetings or gatherings of his kind, he goes for a great deal of ostentation, consciously parodying the Anarchs by wearing lots of leather, chains, a vest, webgear and a massive black duster or biker jacket. He is always heavily armed but especially makes a point to be at those times, again parodying the stereotypical vampire hardcase: a half-dozen different firearms (at hips, underarm holsters and on harnesses) and assorted melee weapons (most notably the late Mika’s daisho) as well.

Preferred Disciplines:
Obfuscate, Potence, Protean, Auspex. He desires to learn Thaumaturgy and even has acquired some thaumaturgical documents and a little training, but has not yet managed to master it.

Affiliations:
Camarilla – Servire to Archon Alonzo Guillen. (the Chronicle’s timeline was prior to Petrodon’s assassination).
Anarch – operates with an independent gang of ‘Anarch’ troubleshooters that has won some notoriety in the Anarch free state of Los Angeles.
Confederates: The “gang” he works with contains a mix of Camarilla agents like himself and genuine Anarchs that are more or less ignorant of his secret political affiliations. Camarilla agents include Mr. Vincent Tyler (Tremere occultist and real estate magnate generally known merely as Tyler. Pic with Trouble), “Mister” (Lasombra antitribu wiseguy) and Caesar Lopez (Toreador photographer). Anarch/unaligned compatriots include “Sphere” (Gangrel surfer-chick),  Jose (Gangrel gangsta and dog breeder), Andy Yang (Wu Zao mystic), “T.K.” (Tremere biker-babe, rival to Tyler), Star Norton (Caitiff – missing and presumed dead in the Jade Invasion) and the late Mika Mizuhara (Brujah martial artist – she turned on Trouble when she learned the truth about him and died at his hands… he got his daisho from her). For a time they included two Kanbujian, “Bob” Lo (attorney, now serving the Quincunx. Demon Shintai form) and Takoshima Yakamo (former Yakuza hitman, slain by the Crypt’s Sons)
Retainers: Trouble keeps two Ghouls (a third having been killed by a now-defunct Assamite), both grizzled old ‘nam vets that were living on Los Angeles’ streets before he turned them. Their names are Jeremiah “Jem” Cohen and Harilalah “Harry” Vanisi.

Known Allies:
The El Hermandad Gang, Louis Fortier, Jeremy MacNeil, Edward Vignes and the Long Beach gang. While not technically allies, he has been invovled in negotiations with the Kuei-Jin of the Flatbush and Stockton Posse, and he does have genuine ally among The Jade Fist, one of their client Wu – a former Kanbujian named Bob Lo.
Known Enemies: The Crypt’s Sons gang and their Sabbat allies, The Torrance gang, The Quincunx (Kuei-Jin) forces of the Jade Invasion, most notably the Emerald Ministry (He was involved in the complete destruction of at least one of the Ministry’s client Wu, The Red Bone Hand League).

History:
Keeping it brief’s the hard part, no?
Trouble was a fairly geeky but capable student living in Los Angeles until he was selected by his sire to infiltrate the Los Angeles anarch community, reasoning that his technical savvy and organizational ability would be useful, as would his knowledge of and familiarity with the area. He quickly got acclimated to his new existence and set to making himself a known member of the anarch community, working with Tyler and Caesar to put down a scheme by the Crypt’s Sons to start a war between two sets of their enemies: El Hermandad and a mortal gang of vampire-hunters. His web of contacts swiftly expanded as he scrambled to evade retribution from the powerful gang, and he learned the dirty secret that they are Sabbat.

The ensuing months were a frenzy of activity as the already-lawless Anarch Free State started chewing itself to rags. Trouble and his companions cut deals, traded secrets and in general made themselves valuable (striking out against a nomadic Sabbat pack that they uncovered, for example) as well as making enemies and facing the usual trials of young Kindred. They did their best to bolster figures that they felt were reasonable and bring down blatant criminals and Sabbat agents, trying to pave the way for the Camarilla to return to Los Angeles as peacefully as possible as well as protecting the Masquerade from the Anarchs’ sloppiness as best they could.

They  also followed up any mysterious lead or strange occurrence they could, to try and uncover any unknown variables and understand their condition better. In this process, they discovered two recently-awakened Kanbujian and tried to figure out exactly what sort of vampires these strangers were.

Numerous schemes, intrigues, betrayals and tribulations in a short span of time followed, including ambushes and assassination attempts against the coterie by enemies and former allies. Notably, Mika Mizuhara tried to take the rest of them out with a car-bomb that left Trouble’s already-battered old Cadillac a flaming wreck and injured all of them severely, though quick thinking enabled them to escape just before it went off. Trouble killed Mika with a surprise maneuver while she was standing over his prostrate form preparing to behead him. Unlife was dangerous and full of pitfalls, but he seemed to be navigating it pretty successfully.

Then the Kuei-Jin struck the Anarch Free State like a cinderblock hurricane in what they termed the Jade Invasion portion of their Great Leap Outward. His coterie (and their masters) deemed these foreigners a greater threat than the Anarchs, and they set to fighting the Kuei-Jin with a will, seeking redirect as much of the invaders’ wrath against the Crypt’s Sons as possible and to rally other Anarchs to hold firm against them – both to stop the Kuei-Jin and to make sure the Anarchs were softened up along the way.

They managed to set up meetings with a few Kuei-Jin leaders (one of which briefly turned into a battle before cooler heads prevailed) and establish a basic understanding of the invaders’ goals, agreeing to turn Lo over to them and feeding the Cathayans some information about the Crypt’s Sons, who were already proving an annoyance to the invaders.

The struggle continues unabated, with the Anarchs and the Cathayans both suffering brutal casualties and turning Los Angeles into the battleground for a meat-grinding war of attrition while at least three different exterior forces attempt to put pressure to bear upon the conflict.

Personality: Trouble is wickedly smart in some ways and quite cuning but hardly genius-level. He is a study in contradictions in many ways. He’s generally dutiful and honest with his allies, but duplicitous and scheming when dealing with his enemies. He plays his cards close to his chest, but does so flamboyantly, with a certain gallant flair. His outgoing personality puts many other kindred off guard with him, assuming they have got his motivations and emotions pegged… sometimes they’re even right. Trouble has an active wit and sense of humor, and a wide artistic streak: he would have been served well by the Toreador Embrace, and has tried unsuccessfully to get the undead art community to look at his work, resulting in frustration and bad blood. He does genuinely seek friendship and companionship in his lonely undead existence, even from Kindred that ought to be his enemies.
Despite the dangerous and brutal world he’s been drawn into, he has managed to cling to a remarkable level of Humanity through compassion, kindness and genuine attempts to mitigate the worst excesses in a city at war… though he’s starting to slip. There are so many base acts that are so easy to justify under circumstances like these…

A nice face portrait, Trouble’s self-portrait, in the darkness, with an axe but no coat, his original design sketches,
I’ve produced a lot more pics of this guy and his compatriots. Many of them never got posted online (including a couple of action-shots) and some just never got scanned.

Edited a bit after twillitts posted a similar thingie, using a couple categories he added.
